Escher Cubes
Febravar is a Brazilian retail trade fair and, in 2016, it launched a surface pattern design contest with a simple brief: “The artistic theme of the contest follows the visual theme of the event; it is abstract and inspired by geometry: the CUBE. This theme allows creative freedom for the designer, with various meanings and interpretations.”
Influenced by a professor from my university, I decided to take part in the contest and create my own pattern. In searching for references and aiming to move away from the conventional, the cube forms were developed in reference to the work of M. C. Escher, an artist known for his geometric compositions. I then moved away from the black, white, and gray color palette and introduced a vibrant green. The textures add a three-dimensional sense of volume to the pattern.

Eight finalists were selected during the first round. The organizers created a dress featuring each pattern, which was displayed at the fair to facilitate voting. After that, two winners were chosen: one by popular vote and the other by the technical jury, in which my pattern won!
There was an awards ceremony with dancers wearing the garments, and the trophy was a miniature mannequin dressed in the piece, one of the cutest things I’ve ever received.
